Social Skills:
Our start-of-the-year social skills revolve around how to be in school all day, 5 days a week! While many of our friends had a preK program roughly the same number of hours, expectations have changed and we need to develop some school stamina! We have begun discussing personal space, hand-washing and other ways to stay healthy, how to speak respectfully with teachers and peers, self control, and many other skills!
Science:
Our first mini science unit is on nocturnal and diurnal animals! We will begin learning about different animals that sleep during the day time. Our key questions include the following: What is a nocturnal animal? What is a diurnal animal? Why are some animals nocturnal/diurnal? Which animals are nocturnal/diurnal?
Math:
Developing a strong number sense is CRUCIAL in kindergarten! While many students come into K knowing many numbers, understanding that numbers can take on many different forms is equally, if not more important! For example, we see the number "5" in many different ways: on a full hand, in a ten frame, on a dice, on a domino, scattered on a paper, as WELL as the numeral 5. We begin with numbers 0-5 and strengthen our understanding of the many ways we see numbers represented in our lives!
Reading:
We will begin our phonics program this week learning about the letter "Ll". We will explore handwriting, identification, sounds, as well as listening for the sound in words we hear! We will also be working in our notebooks with our first sight words, which are color words! This week we are looking at the words red, blue, and yellow.
Religion:
We pray as a class each morning with Ms. Doyle on the announcements, but we also pray as a class during our morning meeting. Spontaneous prayer is one standard of religion that is focused on in kindergarten, and we will start practicing this daily. We will work on not only asking God for people to feel better or for a good day (which are GREAT things to pray for!) on thanking the Lord for the many blessings in our lives!
In addition, we will begin preparing to attend Mass with the rest of the school NEXT Wednesday, September 16. We will be discussing expectations for attending Mass as a part of our school community: the kids are expected to genuflect, make the sign of the cross, sit, stand, and kneel along with the rest of the school congregation! If making the sign of the cross and/or genuflecting are not a part of your family's practices, please contact me!
