Good afternoon!
We are already rocking and rolling in another four-day week! Tomorrow we are going to Mass at 8:00. Please have your child to school by 7:40 at the latest. Most kids arrive between 7:20 and 7:30 and have plenty of time to do their morning jobs and morning work! Thank you for helping them have a successful start to their day! On Thursday morning, we will be taking the NWEA reading test. We will have an early snack again on this day—please help them get a good breakfast and nights’ sleep! I was very impressed with math scores of our class; they worked really hard and answered tough questions! Please see Ms. Doyle’s newsletter for the permission slip for bowling during Catholic School’s Week—PLEASE also write your child’s shoe size somewhere on the form. This is incredibly helpful to get them get shoes at the bowling alley as quickly as possible. The cost of the field trip is $6. I am going to start sending sight words home with each child either this week or next week. They will come in an envelope—after I write on them, the kiddos will be the only one handling their cards. Please keep them at home for at least two nights and practice them—once they can recall them immediately without sounding them out, they can come back and I will send home new ones! Sight words are one of the most important tools a kindergartener can have to read on-level books. Being "ready" to learn sight words is impacted by both development and environment, so if they are pushing back or argue about working on sight words, PLEASE don't force it! They get exposure at school that will help them become accustomed to how they work. Thank you so much for helping your child develop this important skill! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! We're on the road to 1st grade now! Lisa BOY are we excited for Christmas break! We talked about 2 days at school and 12 days at home--but we're still working hard for those two days!
Today we made ripped paper advent wreaths, added and subtracted with marshmallows, checked out library books, and had a visit from Ms. Dietz in the afternoon! Tomorrow is the Grinch Day! The kids can be out of uniform in their favorite "ugly" Christmas sweater or red and green! We will make thank-you cards for our outstanding custodian, Mr. Brezina, who will be moving onto bigger and better things after Christmas break! We will also do a 5-senses activity with ginger snaps in the morning, as well as a "Grinch" themed scavenger hunt with hats! In the afternoon, we will watch "The Grinch" and the kids will bring home their Christmas presents from me. I don't have them open at school and let them know it's up to YOU as to when they can open them at home! :) Keep an eye out for the "Christmas Star" in the southwestern sky around 5:30 tonight! We didn't talk much about it today, but Ms. Doyle has been mentioning it over the announcements! We have learned so much about the Nativity and Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem over the past 3 weeks! Tomorrow is our last day of school until we return on January 4, 2021. I can't wait to keep growing in faith with your children after the New Year. Christmas blessings to all of you--I hope you all enjoy time together over break! THANK YOU!!!! Lisa Happy Tuesday!
We had a lovely day celebrating the Feast of the immaculate conception today! The kids did a great job in church, which was longer than usual. It is amazing to watch the Holy Spirit at work inside these little bodies—that really is the only explanation for how they are able to sit, stand, and kneel so still for 45 minutes. It is miraculous! We will be designing Nativity ornaments for the contest tomorrow! The kids are going to do such a wonderful job. We have a very unique Advent calendar that has 24 short books telling the Nativity Story! Ask your kids about what we’ve learned so far. We’ve talked about Bossy King Herod, Mary and Joseph, and today heard about the Wise Men who discovered the star! On Thursday, our class ONLY will be recording “Silent Night” as our contribution to the school Christmas program. They have been working SO HARD and I can’t wait for you to see the finished product! **Please dress your child in their Christmas best for school on Thursday. They can be out of uniform.** Please also keep in mind that they have gym on Thursday, so they should still have tennis shoes with them to change into!!! The kids have also been chipping away at their Christmas presents for YOU! We shared SO MANY priceless giggles yesterday. I wish I could tell you why, but it would ruin the surprise!! :) It is so special to share this time with them as they pour their heart into your gifts. I can't WAIT for you to see them! I will reassure you that the paint is washable, and they're having a BLAST! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any concerns. This is such a special, exciting time of year, but emotions can also run high for these little ones! Extra patience all around is so important. If you are noticing unusual anxiety or "bigger" emotions than usual, please feel free to reach out so we can conquer the big feelings together! I will do the same! I'll be in touch heading into the weekend with more info on fun to come next week! Lisa Tomorrow is our 50th Day! We are going to have a celebration! The kids can come to school OUT OF UNIFORM (kindergarteners only!) in 50s clothes. Rolled jeans, white t shirts, black jackets, poodle skirts, cat-eye glasses....lots of possibilities! We'll have all sorts of fun 50s themed activities and tunes for our day!
Please continue sending snow gear to school with the kids. Even when there is not snow on the ground, it's chilly enough that they should wear snow pants, a winter coat, hat, gloves and boots every day. We are in need of a few extra hats and pairs of gloves for kiddos who forget, because that happens! If you have any extras at home that you'd be willing to donate, please send them to school! If your child has to borrow from school, I will send them home to be washed and returned. Thank you!! After Mass on Wednesday, we will be bringing food to the Peace Center. We will walk, as a class, and drop off our bags. Please send some non-perishable food items to school to donate! Please send it in a plastic or brown bag. The walk is a couple blocks away, so please also make sure it's not too heavy for your child to carry that whole way! Feel free to send them tomorrow or Wednesday. If your child rides the bus to and/or from school, please keep an eye out for an email from Ms. Doyle about possible bussing changes. With the district switching to distance learning, there may be some changes to pick-up/drop off times and bus numbers. Finally, please remember to send a snack to school with your child daily! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! Lisa Hello everyone!
We had an AWESOME day today and accomplished so much! It looks like we have snow in the forecast for tomorrow. . . we know what that means! Please send snow pants, boots, a winter coat, hat, and gloves to school with your child tomorrow, and any day with snow and cold temperatures. We will go outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 0 degrees. A reusable grocery bag makes a GREAT tote for bringing items back and forth. **As a default, I will have kids KEEP their snow pants at school** If you would like them to bring them home each night, please let me know! If they have a pair that can just "live" at school, that will make their travel back and forth easier. If not, no big deal! Please shoot me an email if you would like your child's snow pants to travel back and forth each day. **If your child goes on the bus or to the pick up line, I will have them wear their coats, hats, gloves, and boots home as a default so they don't slip in their tennis shoes. ** Please send other shoes to school every day for your child to wear in the building. They need tennis shoes on Tuesday and Thursday for gym. If they have a pair of tennis shoes that can "live" at school, that would be AWESOME! **Kids who attend clubhouse will bring ALL snow gear to clubhouse so they can go outside!** As another reminder--book orders for November are due on Friday! Thanks, all! Have a great week! Lisa Happy Friday!
Everything is all cleaned, bleached, and reorganized at school! Thank you SO MUCH for offers to help. We are so lucky that nobody was in the room and that nothing irreplaceable was damaged. You never would've guessed there was a deer in our room. . .what a story we have to tell! Next week we will celebrate Veterans Day on Wednesday. I put together a presentation each year about the branches of the military, and I like to include pictures of past or present service members related to the kids! They love seeing familiar faces. If you have any family members that I could include in the presentation, please send me an email with a name and rank, branch, years served, relation to the student, and a picture! I mentioned this to many of you during conferences, but I think I missed a few! We will celebrate our 50th day of school (WOW!) on Tuesday, November 17. Yes, even though we didn't come to school today! They get a free day so we can stay on count with the rest of the school. :) They are invited to come to school dressed in 1950s style clothes! This is SUCH a fun day--one of my favorite days of our school year by far. I can't wait to celebrate with them! I can't wait to see the kids on Monday! Lisa I couldn't be more excited to welcome the kids back to the building tomorrow! I'm trying not to say "back to school" because we didn't take a break from learning!! They worked hard, showed up every day ready to rock and roll, and I'm so proud of them!
