Happy Thursday!
Just a few notes as we head into another Friday. The kids can wear their 2020 MARATHON shirts tomorrow with bottoms of their choice--it doesn't have to be a school skirt, shorts or pants! Book orders went home yesterday! Scholastic book orders are always 100% optional. The easiest way to order from Scholastic is to submit an order online using our class code RJBZZ. I then submit all the orders after their due date. This maximizes points I earn to order free books for our class! If you would like to order from the October catalogs, please order by Friday, October 9. I will then submit all the orders together the following Monday. The catalogs that are sent home only include a fraction of the books available--check out Scholastic Online to see all of the books! School picture day is almost here! Kindergarten will take pictures next Thursday, September 24. The kids can be out of uniform for pictures! Order forms were sent home yesterday. Even if you are not ordering pictures, the order form must be filled out with your child's name in order for your child's picture to be taken for the yearbook. Thank you! Yesterday, I re-invited all parents to SeeSaw accounts. I used the email addressed included in our automatic email system. If you did not receive an email, please check your spam folder! If you still don't see it, let me know and we'll try a paper copy. We had a very exciting "mystery visitor" today in kindergarten for our 10th day of school! Ask your child about Zero the Hero! They were VERY excited!! I'm sure you'll hear all about him! That's all for today! Please let me know if you have any questions. Lisa Hello families!
We had a rockin' Monday today! I've been impressed each morning with the kids' memories--each day they're remembering more and more parts of our morning routine, and soon it will be second-nature! Afternoons are a little tricker, but their stamina will keep building and I know we'll be in a comfortable rhythm in no time at all. One thing I'd love for you to practice at home is tucking in shirts! I know that might sound silly, but it can be hard for some kids to master! It's not something you realize has to be learned! I always tell the they need to use both hands and to use their WHOLE hand, not just their thumbs, to push their shirt into their skirt, shorts, or pants. They are expected to have their shirts tucked in when in uniform during the day! The kids are beyond thrilled to be hearing their names and friends' names called to go get puffies! They have the system down--for every $100, they get a Puffie! For $300, they will get a pizza (to be distributed at a date AFTER the marathon!) They can keep bringing in pledges until a week after the marathon to qualify for the prizes. We went to the church to talk about Mass expectations! This is a huge learning process for everyone, even kids who go to mass on the weekends, because school expectations often look a bit different. I can't wait to take them to church this week! Lastly, we started an exciting new science unit today! Our apple unit will take us to the end of September and combines a super fun thematic unit with science lessons! Tomorrow, we will taste-test apples. As far as I'm aware, we have no apple allergies. If there are any I'm unaware of, please let me know! Watch the kids' yellow folders TOMORROW for a QR code so you can get linked to their SeeSaw account if you're not already! Mrs. May is helping me finalize classes (still a bit jumbled after the split!) and I'll get those home to you tomorrow. I took some great pictures on the playground today that I can't wait to share with you! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions! We're having a fabulous time getting to know each other and I already know it's going to be such a fun year! Lisa Hello all!
Just a few notes as we head into a new week! We had a great two days of getting to know each other and getting a run-down of kindergarten expectations, rules and routines. I full expect to be reviewing all of this tomorrow! There might even be some nerves tomorrow that we didn't see last week because of all the excitement--please don't worry! The adjustment to full-time school is a BIG one and we are all in this together! They'll settle back in tomorrow and, as soon as we're rolling with the day, we'll all remember how happy we are to be back! Today as I'm snuggled up in my sweatshirt, I think we're finally getting our first taste of lovely MN fall weather! This can be a tricky time of year, with chilly temps in the morning and warmer ones in the afternoon. Please help your kindergartener be prepared for recess by sending a light jacket or sweatshirt to school with them as we start feeling the temperatures drop. Please also remember that, if they would like to have a sweater or sweatshirt to wear at school, it needs to be part of our uniform! Navy, white, or red cardigans are permitted, as are red or navy school sweatshirts. Our classroom typically runs warm because of the boiler pipes, but I'd recommend having layers just in case! We will not be attending Mass as a school this week--our first all-school Mass will be next Wednesday, September 16. I am so excited to share this experience with the school's youngest learners. To help your child prepare to attend Mass, please practice the Sign of the Cross with them at home! That's all for now! I will update again on Wednesday with all sorts of 2020 Marathon news! Lisa Schneider Math--
Count and tally! Practice your tally marks and keeping track of your counting today for math! Please upload a picture of the worksheet when you're finished AND have completed the challenges. BONUS CHALLENGES: Circle the picture that shows up the most with your blue crayon. Circle the picture that shows up the least with your red crayon. How much much GREATER is the blue number than the red number? IXL Kindergarten Math C.25 and D.9 (if not already completed) Reading-- Time to crack open your LAST black and white phonics reader OR finish your chapter book! I would love to hear you read this book (or chapter)--please ask someone to help you record yourself reading this book and send it to me! Read it a few times on your own first to get through any tricky spots! Writing-- You're finishing up your sentence scrambles today! Cut up your remaining sentences, mix them around, and write them on the recording sheet. Please take pictures of your sentence scrambles AND your completed worksheet! Today is supposed to be cloudy, but warm! Today, I'd encourage you to get outside and ride something--this could be a bike, roller skates, skateboard, or something else! I'd love to see a picture! Our last Monday of the school year--I really can't believe it!! Please do a new math mission in your notebook today to warm up your brain! Reading: https://bookflix.digital.scholastic.com/pair/detail/bk0024pr/story?authCtx=U.794217314 This is a fun mini-unit on measurement, which goes along with what we've been working hard on in math! Please watch the story, read the book, and work on the puzzlers! There are three different puzzlers today, so depending on time (and focus) you can pick one or do all 3! Religion: "We are a part of God's Family of love". Draw a family portrait today! PLEASE remember how to use 3 or 4 star coloring (lots of different colors that make sense, details, doing your best). This can be done in more than one sitting, especially if you have a big family to draw! Please label your family members and pets with their names (first letter is capital, the rest lowercase!). If this takes more than a day to complete, no problem. I will do something special with these family portraits, so please submit it by Wednesday! Math: Find 4 things in your house OR outside: 1 thing taller than you 1 thing shorter than you 1 thing heavier than you 1 thing lighter than you Take pictures or video and submit to SeeSaw! I would like to have a whole-class zoom on Thursday to wrap things up and read them a special story. We would be enjoying lunch at the park on the last day, so it would be awesome if we could all have lunch together over zoom! It will just be a time for us to chat and update each other. If 12:00 does not work for your family, please let me know. I would love to have everyone on this call if possible! Math mission--pick another math mission to put into your notebook! Write the digital date on top and solve the problem. Reading: Grab your next black and white phonics reader or chapter in your book and read away with an adult nearby! Read the book twice today and make sure to go back to the start of a page if it's tricky. Jump on Epic! today (or pick a book from home) and find a read-to-me story that you like! If there's a quiz after the book, try it out and see how much you remember! If there isn't a quiz, flip back through the pages WITHOUT the sound on and see how much of the story you can retell to a parent or a sibling! Math: Check SeeSaw for a fun math activity! Yellow birds will be doing some fact family review and Blue birds will be working on their addition facts with a fun game! If you didn't finish IXL from last week, please also take a look at T 8, 10, and 11. Writing: Everyone has some sentence scrambles to do! There are a few different sets, so I will put together a video for each one. Watch SeeSaw for the instructions! Please take a picture of the finished scrambles and send them to me--read me your favorite one! Good morning!
I can't explain how proud I am of the kids and all the hard work they're continuing to do.Welcome to the home stretch! Reading/Science: Today's we are using BookFlix Week 2 Lesson 6 lessons on sound! It mixes in some physical science as well as reading and vocabulary, and I think the kids will really enjoy it! They do not need to do any post on SeeSaw when they use BookFlix. https://bookflix.digital.scholastic.com/pair/detail/bk0044pr/start?authCtx=U.794217314 I'd also love for the kids to pick a book from home today. If they, or someone else, can take a video of them holding the book, have them point out the front cover, back cover, title, title page, whether or not the book has a special spine (words on the spine) and if the book is hardcover or paperback! Math: Today, I'd like them to watch my video on using our feet for nonstandard measurements! Their challenge today is to find four things in their home OR outside that they can measure with their feet. They should either write the name of what they measured, draw a picture of it, or both, and write how many feet long it was with a pencil. Then, they should take a picture of the paper and send to me on SeeSaw. Religion: Watch my video on the Easter Trinity and Sign of the Cross. Then, complete the tracing worksheet and color the picture. When they upload a picture of their work, they should record themselves saying the Sign of the Cross with the recording tool as well. I would love to do another whole-class Zoom on Friday this week. These have been such a great time for the kids to see each other. We will do a springtime directed drawing together! This will be at 1:30. Thank you for all you do! I hope you have a great start to your week! Good morning!
I hope all the kids had a refreshing 4-day weekend! We were blessed with some BEAUTIFUL weather! I can't believe we are already entering the final days of the school year. I will be using our 10-minute Zoom calls this week for a little bit of assessment as well as reading. Tomorrow, I will put out a link to schedule these calls for the rest of the week. Reading: We are going to start something new today! We are going to be using Scholastic BookFlix for a couple lessons each week. Scholastic put together incredible FREE resources for kids who are distance learning, and I think the kids will really enjoy them! Each lesson will include a video "book", a story to read, and a vocab game. I made a loom video for you and the kids to explain how the website works. I'll also include the link for today's video, book, and vocab lesson below. Please let me know if you have any questions!BookFlix Intro - Watch Vide https://bookflix.digital.scholastic.com/pair/detail/bk0051pr/story?authCtx=U.794217314 Math: Today the kids will work on patterns! They should watch my SeeSaw video first and then complete the worksheet. It has been a while since we've worked on patterns, so the review video will be helpful! They will ALSO complete a MATH MISSION starting today! In their big folders, I put a few sheets with smaller rectangles, each with a math problem on them. They will pick one each day to complete. If they still have their red notebook handy, they can glue their math mission into the next blank page in their notebook and solve the problem. (This is great practice finding the next page, cutting, gluing, writing the date on the top of the page etc.) I will outline this for the kids in the math video for today as well! I think they'll enjoy these!!! Writing: They will complete the "Mixed Up Sentences II" page! They should cut the words up on the bottom, glue the words in the correct order (look for periods and capital letters!) and then write the sentence on the lines. The sentence should fit! Lots of new things today! Let me know if there are any questions. Happy last day of April!
A couple things to note today: https://sites.google.com/swsaints.org/swsdistancelearning/home Above is a link for prayer and announcements from yesterday. As a reminder, today will be our last day of school work until next Tuesday! We will be taking a 4-day weekend to plan out assessments and figure out our next steps for May. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility! Reading: The kids each have a passage on SeeSaw with instructions--they all have some questions to answer about the text on their passage and they should all use the microphone button on the template to record themselves reading me the passage! Please also have the kids complete the 3rd phonics page in their packet. Math: Yellow birds will watch a video on finding a missing part using subtraction. There will be an extra step in their assignment that's explained in the video, so please have them watch the video before starting the worksheet! Blue birds will take their understanding of greater and fewer to another level today! They should watch my video first, as they also have an extra step in their assignment to really stretch their understanding! After watching my video, they can work on their 5.16 worksheet. Social Studies: Watch the Time for Kids loom video (SeeSaw) and follow along in their magazine titled "Playing it Safe". RELIGION: We will have a zoom call at 1:00 to talk through our weekly Promise magazine! I will open the meeting at about 12:50 to let kids come into the "waiting room" and will officially let them into the meeting at 1:00 or when everyone is there, whichever comes first! Ms. Doyle will pop into our meeting for a few minutes. The link for the meeting is in your email. Please let me know if you need anything! Thanks for another great week! Lisa |
